DIY Ideas – Make Cool Stuff for Your Special Event!

July 5th, 2010

So I’ve pretty much spent the last hour looking at some really cool sites collecting some super cool ideas for DIY projects. I hope you love these ideas as much as I do! Here they are…enjoy!

Colorful Paper Mobiles (Great for Showers!)

Gorgeous Chiffon and Tulle Flowers

Butterfly Garland {Video Tutorial}

Numbered Vases…I don’t have a link for this one because I can’t remember where I got the photo, but these are fantastic and would be very easy to make. Just get some cool rubber stamps from your local craft store. Make sure you use Staz-On ink (this type of ink is made specifically for glass and other non-porous surfaces). Remember, when you stamp on glass, the stamp will want to slide, so be careful!

Vows Sign. Now I don’t have a link for this one either, but I think this would be super easy to make, especially since you can buy the wood letters from the big box craft stores such as Michaels, AC Moore and  Hobby Lobby. This would also be super cute with the bride and groom’s initials and wedding date :)

DIY Wedding Cake. You Can Totally Do This!

June 27th, 2010

Whooda Thunk? Make your own wedding cake? Well it’s totally possible! According to Martha Stewart, it requires neither culinary talents nor design skills! Just order a buttercream cake from a local bakery and a pack of chocolate panels from chocolatier Christopher Norman or make the panels yourself!. Adhere panels of varying heights onto the tiers, and fill the ledges with golden raspberries, strawberries, blueberries or another fruit.
You can do this!

Viviana and Alin’s Wedding

June 5th, 2010

One of the things I love most about my job is that I get to meet some very, very wonderful people. Without a doubt, Viviana ranks high up there on the wonderful list. She and I hit if off about two seconds after we met. I went to see Viviana and her mom, Berta, on a day when we were having a blizzard here in Virginia. When I arrived, the snow had just started. Luckily, Vivi lives close to my studio so I wasn’t too worried. When I left, the snow was almost a foot and falling fast. Funny thing is, we never noticed and the time flew by. We were too busy laughing and carrying on to worry about such things as how I was actually going to get home safely.

As I began working with Vivi and her mom, I got to see firsthand just how strong the bond is between them. They love each other so very much and what’s so sweet is that neither of them takes the other for granted.

I feel so lucky that Vivi hired me to do her invitations. Not only did I get to work with a wonderful client, but I made a new friend :-)

Here are the pretty pics! Click on them for a larger view.

Neil and Amelia’s Amazing Bethesda, MD Wedding

May 29th, 2010

The very first time I ever met Neil and Amelia, I went to their amazing place in Washington, DC. I was a million hours late because I didn’t take into account the fact that the Marine Corps Marathon was going on that very morning. Every single street I needed to take was closed (normally, this wouldn’t have stopped me, but on this day, these streets were jammed with runners and cops). Now while I’ve lived in the DC area for my whole life, my sense of direction sucks if: 1. I have to take a detour. 2. I have to take 10,000 MORE detours and 3. My navigation lady doesn’t even know how to handle it. I called Amelia from my cell phone about fifty times, saying, “I’m so sorry! I’ll be there REALLY soon!”

When I finally arrived, Amelia and Neil greeted me like I was an old friend. I felt instantly at ease and our meeting was wonderful. I learned so many things about this amazing and wonderful couple and feel so lucky to have had the chance to work with them. Thanks, Amelia and Neil.

Funny Stuff! Page From a 1950′s Home Economics Book – Teaching Girls How To Prepare for Married Life

April 24th, 2010

1. Have dinner ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time.

This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him, and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.

2. Prepare yourself: Take 15 minutes to rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking.
He has just been with a lot of work- weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.

3. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up school books, toys, paper, etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables.
Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift, too.

4. Prepare the children: Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces if they are small, comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes.
They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

5. Minimize the noise: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of washer, dryer, dishwasher or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.
Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

6. Things to avoid: Don’t greet him with problems or complaints. Don’t complain if he’s late for dinner.
Count this as minor compared with what he might have gone through that day.

7. Make him comfortable: Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes.
Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. Allow him to relax and unwind.

8. Listen to him: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first.

9. Make the evening his: Never complain if he does not take you out to dinner or to other places of entertainment; instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure, his need to be home and relax.

10. The goal: Try to make your home a place of peace and order where your husband can relax.

Wow. I find every single one of these absolutely hilarious beyond measure. I keep reading them and laughing harder every time. Enjoy :) )
